We’ve compiled some great tips from various self-proclaimed Halloween experts over the years. Some of them are probably obvious to you, but perhaps there’s one or two that can help you in your search for the perfect costume. Here they are in no particular order… |

Build Off of What You Already Have Think about something unique that you already own. If it’s authentic and eye catching, it can be a great foundation for your next costume. For example, if for some reason you own a kilt, it’s not that hard to turn it into a William Wallace Braveheart costume, or better yet Groundskeeper Willie. Own an authentic Jiu Jitsu Gi? Well then slap a bonsai logo on the back and you’re all set as the Karate Kid. Whatever you own, if it’s unique, there has to be a corresponding costume out there. |

Plan 11 Months Ahead Much like Valentines day candy and Christmas ornaments, Halloween costumes are cheapest right after they stop being useful. Costume shops both online and offline usually have clearance sales in November to unload any excess merchandise that didn’t sell for Halloween. Take note of stores that are completely seasonal as they’ll probably be trying to liquidate all of their Halloween goods to make room for their Christmas merchandise. If you’re one of those people that already knows what your next costume will be while you’re still wearing your current costume, you can plan ahead and save yourself a decent amount of money. |

Borrow and Trade Were you jealous of your friend’s costume last year because it was so awesome? Well then ask to borrow it for this year! Chances are he or she isn’t going to go as the same thing two years in a row, because if they do then they’re a little TOO proud of their costume. No one’s going to care if you borrowed it and any good party is going to have plenty of random people and they’ll have no idea your friend wore the same costume the year before. And if your friend is willing to do the same, you two can trade your previous costumes and show everyone that you’re truly BFFs. |
